Recommended
  • Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya (Free Worship)
The Kamisha Honmiya is built in a unique Suwa-zukuri style, with a single worship hall flanked on either side of the offering hall, and has the most remaining buildings of the four shrines. The current buildings were rebuilt during the Edo period, and many valuable structures remain that have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
  • Koji Cafe Kamoshimaru
Marui Ito Shoten, a miso manufacturer, has set up a shop next to its miso storehouse to allow customers to experience the deliciousness of fermented foods. They offer menu items using fermented foods and "koji water" full of the nutrients of koji.
  • Suwa Taisha Shimosha Harumiya (free Worship)
Shimosha Harumiya is said to be the original site of the Suwa Taisha Shimosha, and its Heihaiden and Katahaiden are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The layout of the buildings, which include the Kaguraden, Haiden, left and right Haiden, and Gohoden, is the same as Akimiya. The "Manji Stone Buddha," which was highly praised by Taro Okamoto, is also enshrined nearby.

Kamisha Maemiya is said to be the birthplace of Suwa faith, and in the past, many buildings lined the grounds, including the residence of the Oiwai, who was in charge of the rituals at Suwa Taisha. Climbing the stone steps surrounded by old trees, the main hall appears on the mountainside. This is the only place in Suwa Taisha where you can get close to the four pillars.
