Recommended
  • Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, famous as a power spot for matchmaking, is said to have been founded about 1,500 years ago. It is worshiped as the "god of matchmaking" and "god of family harmony" because it enshrines two married couples and Oonamuchi-no-Mikoto, who is also known as the matchmaking god of Izumo Taisha. The "Tai fortune-telling slips" and "matchmaking balls" are popular.
  • Kura no Machi
"Ichibangai" is known as a storehouse town, with its rows of quaint storehouse-style buildings, with large onigawara roofs, black plaster walls, and thick double doors... It makes you feel as if you have traveled back in time. The oldest of these is the Osawa family residence, built in 1792 (Kansei 4), and designated as an Important Cultural Property by the national government.
  • Kashiya Yokocho
Kashiya Yokocho is a famous spot in Kawagoe, where about 30 confectionery shops are crowded together along a cobblestone road dotted with colorful glass. Lined with confectionery shops that continue to offer simple, nostalgic flavors, anyone who steps inside will feel like a child again.

Toki no Kane
Toki no Kane
The "Toki no Kane" is a symbol of Kawagoe, towering above the atmospheric streetscape of storehouses. It is a 16.2m-tall, three-story wooden bell tower. The current bell tower is the fourth since the first was built in 1627 during the Edo period, and was completed the year after the Great Fire of the Meiji Period. It automatically chimes four times a day (at 6:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00).
The sound of the bells has been selected as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan We Want to Preserve" by the Ministry of the Environment. If you visit Kawagoe, be sure to give it a listen.
